CHARACTER INFO

• Character Name: Thomas Jopson
• Character Age: 27
• Character Canon: The Terror AMC
• Canon Point: Just after he realizes he's been abandoned

• Character History: History here

• Character Personality:.

— Loyalty: Jopson is fiercely loyal to Captain Francis Crozier, the leader of the expedition. He respects and admires Crozier, often going to great lengths to support and protect him. Jopson's loyalty to Crozier is evident in his unwavering dedication to carrying out his orders and keeping the crew in line, even in the face of harsh conditions and dwindling morale. Crozier is not always the most popular of people and some of the men defect, turning to mutiny and causing panic and strife. Jopson never wavers from Crozier’s side, always keeping himself there to provide whatever type of support is needed.
— Diligence: Jopson is a diligent and hardworking member of the crew. He takes his responsibilities seriously and is known for his attention to detail, especially in his role as a steward and in maintaining the ship's supplies. Jopson was entrusted with, arguably, the most time consuming and tedious job of the ship. He was the Captain’s steward, the steward over all the other stewards on the ship. His job was ensuring that the ship ran smoothly. The one job he took the most seriously, though, was attending to his captain. He had to quietly and dutifully ensure that, after a bout of drinking, the Captain could go out among his men. He tended to this responsibility with as much effort and tenacity as any of his other myriad of duties.
— Resilience: Throughout the series, Jopson demonstrates remarkable resilience in the face of the harsh Arctic conditions and the numerous challenges and threats that the crew encounters. He remains steadfast in his determination to survive and complete the mission. Jopson pulls the sledges with the rest of the crew. He takes his rations without complaint. He even marches to his death in the same way. At the end, as he’s ill and dying, when Crozier enters the room, Jopson tries to push himself up to serve him. Until the very end, he remains a steadfast man of his word, who gave himself up completely to the duties before him.

— Introversion: Jopson is introverted and often reserved, making it challenging for his fellow crew members to get to know him on a personal level. This can create a sense of distance and isolation, especially in such an isolated and unforgiving environment. He didn’t have many friends, if any. It was really only the Captain he was attached to, and he gave his entire attention to. There were others, other stewards and crewmen who he would sometimes drop his mask around, but, for the most part, he remained aloof. Even after his promotion, he was never part of the Lieutenants, not in his mind. He kept himself apart, deliberately ensuring that he didn’t have to form attachments. Jopson has always and will always be about his duties.
— Inflexibility: At times, Jopson's unwavering loyalty and dedication to authority figures like Captain Crozier led to inflexibility. He was resistant to alternative ideas or approaches, never really straying from his own judgements about people. With Hickey, for example, he was always against him. Even though Crozier’s judgment had been wrong and he had been far too harsh with the man, Jopson remained steadfast in his assertation of Hickey’s guilt. He hated him so much for so long and there was never a moment when he wavered or considered even listening to his side. When he was helping Crozier through his addiction, he was referred to as a mongoose, due to the way he snapped when anyone tried to intervene. Crozier, he felt, was his responsibility and he was unwilling to let anyone else do what he considered his duties.
— Self-Doubt: Jopson's strong sense of duty and responsibility can sometimes lead to self-doubt and guilt when things go wrong. He blames himself for the failures or misfortunes of the expedition, which can weigh heavily on his psyche. He wanted so desperately to help Crozier that, when he made the wrong decisions or things went poorly, he took that on himself. When he was promoted to Lieutenant in the field, he experienced the biggest moment of self doubt and, quite frankly, imposter syndrome. He might have worn the uniform, but he never felt that he deserved it.
